Covering an expanse of 1000m2 within the prestigious Knox Grammar School, the Senior’s balcony offers much potential. Covered entirely in black tiles, the space was rarely used as it was too hot. Therefore, this left the area offering little reason for students, staff or parents to congregate here.
Ultimately, the staff and community sought a new vision for this significant senior’s space. In essence, the young men will soon be making a transition to tertiary education and this area would symbolise and emulate this. The balcony garden area enabled a tactile, empowered and relaxing environment including group and individual learning areas. Being advised that it was important that there were adequate breakout spaces, barbeque facilities and protection from the elements. The schools goal was to include the broader community of parents in the learning journey and this space.
“We engaged Outhouse Design for a key project in designing a suitable outdoor courtyard space for up to 700 students. The design included spaces that could be used for outdoor classrooms, as well as informal gathering spaces, along with an outdoor kitchen. The design and project has been a huge success. We found the Outhouse Design team great to work with and they really listened to our requirements and ideas, delivering great design concepts. They even arranged for us to visit a supplier to view the tile selection to ensure it was in keeping with our vision for the space. The team provided great oversight during the installation/construction phase of the project and were very professional. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them for your next project.”
