Project Description
THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY – THE SOUL SPACE
Sydney | Community Space, Health & Wellbeing
ABOUT THE PROJECT
OUTHOUSE design was commissioned to revitalize an underutilized area at the Sports Oval, at the University of Sydney. Our vision is to transform this space into a vibrant hub that fosters community engagement, encourages access to nature and flexible use. This aligns with the University’s Strategic Plan 2032.
The site’s unique challenges, including its location withing the 1 in 100-year flood zone and the presence of two significant trees on site with robust roots. This presented an exciting opportunity to create a sustainable and resilient design solution. To ensure structural integrity and minimize impact to the existing trees and surrounding environment. The design incorporated elevated and terraced deck platforms following structural, geotechnical and arborist assessments.
With a diverse mix of fixed, flexible, and modular furniture, the outdoor hub is divided into distinct zones to ensure there’s something for everyone. A versatile gathering space, a sizzling barbecue spot, cozy nooks for quiet reflection, and terraced seating with stunning views of the green oval. Conveniently located charging stations at benches and tables also make this space perfect for both work and relaxation.

Inspired by dappled sunlight filtering through the existing trees, the overhead shade structures create a dynamic play of light and shadow. Also providing respite from the summer sun and fostering a sense of tranquility.
As students, visitors and staff members navigate down the terraced area, they will meander through native plants and edible herbs. There is a variety of edible produce, rosemary for the barbeque, or simply pluck some native chamomile on the way to class for a fresh cup of tea!
After dusk, the integrated lighting design brings a new dimension to the space. The warm white illumination across the deck beautifully harmonises with the fairy lights draped throughout the trees. This ensures the space is not only visually appealing and welcoming, but also safe and accessible throughout the night.
