Project Description

THE CEDAR ROOM – IN PROGRESS

Windsor Road, Dulwich Hill | Residential

ABOUT THE PROJECT

As an inner city based design practice our team are used to working with small difficult sites and a design brief that stretches the imagination. This character filled home really takes this to the next level.

With space at a premium every inch counts and so maximising the complete site was key. This unique courtyard garden isn’t small, but its shape combined with significant services meant that we needed to approach the idea of an outdoor room from a different angle, literally !

View through to backyard

By locating all the garden elements and pathways on the angle of the house, allowed us to maximise space and open up the connection from front garden to rear. So rather than the traditional plonked outcome of the outdoor room, we are able to create a unified courtyard experience.

The central hub of green draws the elements together and combined with bespoke insitu concrete pavers unify the connection, whilst allowing for as much planting and year round texture as possible.

Boundaries of green will create a sense of privacy, whilst tactile materials such as stone and timber will be used to create variation and points of interest. Overhead protection will shield the back doors, with planting, scented shrubs and seasonal production within grasp of the kitchen.
