Spring is kicking into gear by October, and most plants will be putting on a steady flush of growth. Here’s a few jobs to keep you busy:

  • If you haven’t already, this is a great time to tip-prune any autumn- or winter-flowering shrubs, like camellias and many natives such as Grevillea, Banksia and Correa. Remove just a short length from the top of each stem or shoot to encourage the spring flush to emerge from the lateral buds – this will keep your shrubs dense and compact.
  • The warmer and drier weather in Sydney can sometimes bring disease; powdery mildew loves the warm days, cool nights and the frequent dews, while mealy bug can creep up on indoor plants. Monitor your plants and treat accordingly – make sure to discuss with a trained horticulturalist if you’re not sure what products to use.
  • Check the mulch levels in your garden and top up if necessary. Mulch is most effective during summer and winter, when it insulates and protects the soil from extremes, but it also helps to keep down weed seedlings from sprouting during the spring period of growth.
