• With the risk of a freak heatwave burning your plants now mostly past, this is the ideal time to give your hedges a final trim before the winter dormancy sets in. Most hedges will put on a flush of growth in early autumn – take advantage of this by giving them a light tip prune all over to keep them looking clean, but avoid pruning heavily as the plants may not rebound until spring.
  • Early autumn is arguably the best time to plant in Sydney for the majority of perennials and shrubs. It’s the rainiest part of the year, while temperatures in the soil are still warm and microbial life is active, and air temperatures are slowly dropping from their uncomfortable highs. Anything planted now also has the longest possible time to establish its root zone before the following summer. If you’re thinking about putting in a new tree, some hedging or shrubs, or even a perennial border, this is a perfect time to do so. If you need help finding the right plants, OUTHOUSE design can also arrange plant supply for your project.
  • You can also propagate your own plants – this is also a great time to divide clumping plants and repot potted plants into larger containers. Some plants are suitable for autumn cuttings – look for anything putting out soft new growth, or take ‘semi-hard’ cuttings of growth from spring that has begun to harden off for evergreen shrubs like camellias.
