Project Description

Industrial Homestead

Livingstone Road, Marrickville | Residential

This typical Marrickville Federation-style house had been renovated by the owners several years previously, with a material palette blending earthy colours and timbers with industrial textures. The rear garden was dominated by an existing pool and studio, but access into the garden was cramped.

Outhouse began by realigning the garden steps, making a small change to achieve a more comfortable flow from the lower patio to the upper garden.

The pool fence had to be reviewed, and this provided a great opportunity to think outside the box with regard to materials. The existing glass panels were incongruous with the material palette in the rest of the property, so Outhouse designed a pool fence using hardwood timber and metal tubing, to allow the fence to disappear into the garden planting. The fence was also aligned to create a ribbon connection from lower to upper, all the way to the studio.

The clients love sitting around a firepit, and the new pool fence alignment allowed us to create a defined zone for gathering around the flames, where before it had been sitting on the lawn. Oversized concrete stepstones created a more comfortable and hard-wearing way to traverse the garden, while the addition of brick paving in irregular bands softens the hard surface and creates interesting gaps and edge for planting.

The access into the studio was also adjusted, with wider and angled steps connecting it into the flow of the landscape and creating a more defined and spacious outdoor area for occupants to enjoy.
