Project Description

Backyard Therapy

Tantallon Avenue, Arncliffe | Residential

This traditionally-fronted home in Sydney’s inner south had a typically empty and underused back yard, with an existing patio disconnecting the inside from the outside and giving no reason to explore the garden. The clients also have a child with special needs, and were looking for a way to create a space that could functionally therapeutically for her as well act as a garden for themselves.

The design opened up access from the patio using wide steps, with a material connection in the flooring all the way from the internal living area out to the pool deck. This creates a safe and easily traversable pathway with great flow into the garden from inside.

A small pool outfitted with flexible umbrellas creates a relaxing zone for the adults as well as opportunity for home hydrotherapy in the shade, with room allocated for a mobile hoist if required in the future. The pool deck connected to an intimate covered seating zone built into the existing garage.

The design features gorgeous curves in the materials and delightful sensory planting to create a garden that the clients can enjoy and safely allow their child to explore at her pleasure.
