Project Description

FAMILY GARDEN HAVEN

Station Street, Petersham | Residential

ABOUT THE PROJECT – IN PROGRESS

Like all small family homes in the Inner West it’s always hard to get the balance right between garden and off street parking. The last thing you want is to have a space that just feels like it’s waiting for the car to come home, especially for a young family as getting outdoors and exploring is key.

So in this case we really wanted to bring the garden up to the house, this was achieved by using a large continuous corten planting edge that we could curve and create not just a planting border, but retain a large fragrant Frangipani tree that once uplit would create a striking feature from the back of the house.  This planter also acted as a supporting structure for the wrap around bench seating and family gathering space. Wide steps lead you down to the lower grassed area bordered by a row of scented Dwarf Magnolia hedging and shrub under planting.

The sliding gate to the rear of the garden allows for car access and parking on the lawn zone, which is made possible due to the installation of an under grass supporting structure, stopping compaction and allowing for drainage and root flow. The boundary fencing is painted one colour to unify the space and highlight the scented climbers.
